I’m sitting in the office that will be mine if I accept the promotion! I haven’t signed the contract yet as I want to see the job description first, no point in getting drawn into something that I don’t actually want to do!!
The Boyf. is shopping for Eire at the moment. I think it is a way of working through his grief so I’m happy to assist – he just bought a 50″ plasma screen TV and a really cool home cinema system! He can afford it and I know he is level-headed enough not to spend cash he doesn’t actually have. He inherited some money from his mother and I have seen this happen before; people inheriting money and then just spending it as quickly as possible in order to be rid of it.
Talking about Eire, they have just followed the example of New York and San francisco and banned smoking from public places – including pubs. I can’t imagine smokeless Irish pubs but it seems to be the trend. I can’t help wondering if it’s because of concern for the nation’s health or the fear that in an increasingly litigious society the powers that be fear for their bank balances. Cynical… moi?!
Anyway, whatever I think about that I will have to set a date soon to give up smoking again. Apart from my health and the health of those around me I just think there is something slightly tacky about people of a certain age smoking!! I mean, to smoke in your youth could be seen as rebelliousness but to continue smoking in your middle age is just as signifier of how stupid you are! By then you know what it is doing to your body and yet you still keep doing it – how stupid is that??

Hi Colin – so nice to see you. I do hope you get the job. I understand your bf spending to get through the grief. I’ve done that loads of time.
Re the smoking ban, I welcome it because I’m not a smoking fan but I feel for people who find it very hard to give up i.e. like you. I think it won’t be too long before they do it over in the UK but at what cost? They’ll probably riot over here like they did in the Council Tax riots….well maybe not.
